OROBORO is a non-profit online literary journal, published bi-annually by Death Rattle, aimed at publishing and promoting poets, authors, and artists. We publish new work from both established and emerging writers. Before you submit, we encourage you to take a look at previous issues to get a feel for what we are looking for.

You can find our in-print collections for purchase here.

We look forward to reading your submission!

All $3 submission donations go directly towards covering the costs of keeping this site up for Oroboro. If the donation is prohibitive to your submitting to us, especially for those who are LGBTQIA+ or BIPOC, please reach out about a scholarship submission to deathrattlewriter@gmail.com

Our editing services are currently open! Send us work below for that extra personal feedback to really polish your poem packet before sending it out into the submission world.

We are un-paid editors reading hundreds of submissions monthly for our regular published issues of OROBORO. Charging here helps to offset that time, labor and expertise donated when reading general submissions. Most times, you'll receive feedback from both editors so you are actually getting two sets of eyes on your work!

We take the reading of and feedback towards yours work seriously and want to take the time to give you the best, most personalized feedback towards your work as we can!

There is opportunity for scholarship or discount with our editing pricing -- just email us at deathrattlewriter@gmail.com with how many poems you are looking to have feedback on and we can discuss!

IMPORTANT NOTE!! Both editing forms are for EDITING SERVICES only and are NOT a submission for PUBLICATION in our journal. They will not be considered for publication. If submitted in error, we of course can refund your editing fee.

For all Submissions:

  • All submissions must include a cover letter. A cover letter includes a short biography about yourself and your work.
  • Simultaneous submissions are allowed and encouraged, just let us know if a portion or the whole of the submission
is accepted elsewhere via a submittable note or email.
  • Submissions should include work in one file in .docx or pdf.
  • We accept submissions from all ages and from anywhere in the world
  • Past submitters to previous issues of Oroboro are totally welcome to submit!
  • Please do not send us previously published work.
  • Only one submission per open reading period.
  • All rights revert to the authors upon publication, though we ask you cite OROBORO when published elsewhere or in anthology.
  • If you are unable to submit your work online or experience any difficulties with our submittable, please let us know at deathrattlewriter@gmail.com

Poetry:
5-6 poems and / or 10 pages. We look at excerpts from long poems, too.
Submissions should include work in one file in .docx or pdf.

Fiction:
1000 word limit. We look at excerpts from longer work, too.
Submissions should include work in one file in .docx or pdf.

Comics:

5(ish) page submission limit. Again, we prefer more than one page of comics / multiple pieces submitted so we are more able to get a feel for your style and intention. If you don’t have more than one piece, giving us context for your comic submission and your work (and include links to other work if you can) in your cover letter would be greatly appreciated in reviewing your submission.

Submissions should include work in one image file, .jpeg, or pdf.

300 dpi minimum. No larger than 8.5 x 11 in: (there’s some artistic wiggle room with this one, just ask us!)

As a writing community working remotely and with submission opportunities opening, we want to be sure to still offer as many ways to work together as possible.

If you are preparing work to submit to submit to our publication or elsewhere and want that extra personal feedback on your work before sending it out into the submission world we are here for you.

Charging $80 here helps to offset that time, labor and expertise when reading general submissions. We try to keep our pricing affordable and accessible because we believe in up-and-coming writers, writers outside of a university setting, writers outside of a robust writing community deserve the same time and attention to their work as anyone inside more established writing resources. However; to be transparent about the time spent individually critiquing 8 pieces, we as editors are making $10-$15 an hour, which is to say, below industry standard. We take the reading of and feedback towards yours work seriously and want to take the time to give you the best, most personalized feedback towards your work as we can!
